Why is pediatric genetics at McLane Children's special?
The genetics team at McLane Children’s Scott & White has been serving Central Texas children for more than 25 years—a period of time that has witnessed amazing changes in how genetic disorders are identified and treated.
Our team works with children and families at all ages and stages of life. Some genetic disorders can be identified and treated while a child is still growing in a mother’s womb. Others may not be noticed until your child reaches puberty. Yet others may be identified in an affected parent or adult family member.
In addition to identifying genetic conditions, our team provides counseling by a staff of professional genetic counselors. Genetic counselors also perform genetic risk assessments for the family, communicate with parents regarding genetic testing options, and provide information on the resources available for the child with a genetic diagnosis.
How can I get my child in to see a pediatric geneticist?
If you believe your child is suffering from a condition caused by an alteration or mutation in a gene or a chromosome abnormality, call the Scott & White Genetics Clinic at 254-724-3379 to set up an appointment.
Your pediatrician may also refer you to a geneticist if he or she suspects your child might have a genetic disorder. Some health plans may require a referral prior to seeing a geneticist. You should contact your insurance company to learn about your child’s coverage.
